Hi, I'm Grace Lam:

a creative product designer with a technical, artistic, and cognitive background.

the start of my design career as a Story-map
The people I've met, places I've gone, and diverse experiences I've collected have shaped my growth.

I want to create human-centric designs that tell a story, functional yet beautiful.

Becoming Superhuman
I designed websites, videos, graphics, decks, and packaging for a B2B neuroscience company.

The nature of my design work was human-focused: I designed to merge human and approachable with credible and science-based. All the designs I made aligned with this goal (branding for physical products,  custom-made reports, presentation decks, and video visual overlays for courses).

I designed & shipped four+ major websites that resulted in increased page views and engagement: BecomingSuperhuman.science (main), Doomscroll.com (documentary), SaharYousef.com (founder's website) MyChronotype.com (assessment), etc.

KiOS Cloud
I designed the interface and experience for a restaurant ordering kiosk app.

In a small but mighty team, we designed and shipped an improved design of the interface within a month to reduce ordering time. We also prototyped a gamified rewards system.

Full-time Training in Anaheim
I was a product designer and technical product manager. Our team initiated an ambitious, full redesign of the school portal and server. The result streamlined user flow (e.g. decreased time spent to perform a task by over 40%).

We recognized the critical need for a re-design upon mapping the complex information architecture of the server and discovering broken user flows and inconsistent visual design. From there, we kicked off the design revamp initiative using Google Material Design guidelines and other defined product design principles.

UC Berkeley
For two years, I worked as UC Berkeley's main designer and design consultant as part of the Publications and Media Center.

I designed a syllabi tool for the department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management. I also made various graphics and a 100+ page report for the University. In doing so, I communicated with various clients, delivered design solutions with a fast turnaround, and shipped efficient and impactful design work.

London + more
In London, I worked on three product design projects using design principles and heuristics. I learned to turn ideas into one pagers, pitch decks, and pitch videos.
Compiled screenshots of product design papers and decks with a cartoon person holding a pencil in the left corner.

From this point forward, I scripted, storyboarded, designed, and animated videos for various places: businesses, schools, a medical center. These experiences  strengthened my storytelling and empathy skills as a designer. I learned to encapsulate big ideas and mission statements into a visual story arc.

Team Chamberlain
In the start of my design career—freshman summer—I pitched the need for a new website to a real estate company.

The result: I designed and built my first ever website for a client with IDX integration and some custom code. I increased the unique visitors by 23% on average each following year and CTA conversions by 14% per year.

EthiCal Apparel
In college, I also managed a team of designers in a student social enterprise that launched seasonal lines of stickers, apparel, pins, prints and fulfilled client orders. We produced multiple products that sold out within the first quarter.

I started out as a design associate and marketing associate before transitioning to be the VP of Design. My last role was inaugurating the new web team as the VP of Web Development. Our profits were donated to social good causes.

I've always liked to draw and make things for people, so this was a cool experience. But more than that, managing a team and overseeing the production process from end to end (sketch to print, prototype to website) was a huge learning opportunity. That became a launchpad for cool freelance work I got to do, like custom-designed apparel, conference packets, flyers, and etc. for different organizations and institutions.

Grace Lam, me

Karat
As a freshman in college, I was also a project manager for a top supplier of food and beverage disposable packaging products, spearheading a full product shoot and creating assets for product pages.

...and onwards!
🚀 design career continues
The previous timeline events stand as an abridgment of what I define to be my beginning experiences as a designer. They range over a large spectrum, but it's this eclectic starting point that shapes me as a unique, well-rounded designer.

From this starting point, I'm still on the same track. My goal then, as it is now, is to continue to make meaningful human-centered design—design that merges neuroscience, technology, and art to impact lives, augment happiness, and effect change.

I've seen firsthand how even small designs can make a difference, and it's my hope to continue to learn and grow alongside creative minds to design with meaning.

And finally, here's a short Q&A just in case.

more about me

What programs do you know how to use? Languages?

Programs: I would be lying if I didn't say that Figma is one of my favorite design tools. But aside from Figma, I also love the power the Adobe suite has to offer (mainly Illustrator, Photoshop, PremierePro, and InDesign. I've used other design tools before, but I'd say those are my main ones. (Oh, and Webflow for websites 😌).

Languages: If we're talking human, I speak English, Cantonese, Mandarin (though my Mandarin is not as good as my Canto), Korean, and very limited French.
If we're talking computer, I've mainly used Java, Python, SQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript.

What are your hobbies?

My interests are a big part of influencing how I am as a designer. When I'm not designing, you can find me training for another long race, hunting for the next to-read book, making content for @blobdrawings, or designing wedding programs & signage. For more, check out my play page. :)
